You’ve read what a homelab is, you’re sold, and you have about $150 to spend. Every guide from a few years ago says that’s plenty — buy a cheap box, add RAM for $25, add an SSD for $20, done. Here’s the uncomfortable news: in 2026, that advice is stale. The parts got expensive. The good news is that the boxes didn’t, and if you shop the way this guide shows you, $150 still buys a genuinely capable first homelab — one quiet little computer that runs ten services and sips power like a phone charger.
The plan: one box, everything on it
This build is deliberately boring, and that’s its strength. You buy one used business mini PC — the 1-litre machines that corporations lease by the tens of thousands and then dump onto the used market — with a six-core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and an NVMe SSD already inside. You install Proxmox VE on it, and you run every service as its own lightweight container.
My own lab is four of these little machines clustered together, but I want to be clear about something: I didn’t start with four. Nobody should. One box teaches you everything — virtualization, networking, backups, containers — and if the hobby sticks, the box you buy today becomes node one of the cluster you build next year.
Why 2026 changed the shopping strategy
The classic budget-homelab move was to buy the cheapest 8 GB configuration you could find and upgrade it yourself. That advice quietly died this year, and it’s worth understanding why, because it changes what you should click “buy” on.
The AI build-out has been eating the world’s supply of memory chips. Tom’s Hardware, which tracks memory pricing continuously, documented 2×16 GB DDR4 kits jumping from roughly $60–90 in October 2025 to $150–180 by January 2026 in its RAM price index. SSDs followed the same curve for the same reason: Gamers Nexus documented average NVMe pricing up around 115% as the NAND shortage bit. A RAM stick and an SSD that together cost maybe $45 in the old guides can now cost more than the entire computer.
Here’s the part that saves your build: used business PCs never got the memo. They’re priced by the pallet-load based on corporate lease cycles, not component spot markets — and the RAM and SSD are already inside.
So the 2026 rule is simple: never buy a bare or 8 GB box planning to upgrade it later. Pay the extra $20–40 for a listing that says 16 GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe right on the tin. The seller effectively sells you the parts at 2024 prices, because they were installed before the shortage repriced them.
The shopping list
There are three machines to search for, and for homelab duty they’re interchangeable — same CPU family, same size, same behavior. Buy whichever one is cheapest with the right configuration the day you look.

The chip that makes this generation the sweet spot is the Intel Core i5-8500T: six real cores at a 35-watt TDP (that’s the chip’s designed power budget — why these boxes stay cool and quiet), 2.1 GHz base, 3.5 GHz turbo, and the standard Intel UHD 630 graphics of the 8th-gen desktop family, which can hardware-transcode video. Earlier generations have four cores; this one has six, and the price difference is usually small — the PassMark page linked above has the benchmark numbers if you want to compare it against anything else you’re eyeing.
If every 8th-gen listing is over budget the week you shop, drop back one generation — an EliteDesk 800 G3 with an i5-6500T and 16 GB often sells in the $80–120 range. Four cores instead of six, but it runs the exact same stack, just with less headroom.
Where the money goes:
- The box, $90–140. With 16 GB and an NVMe drive inside. This is 90% of the budget, on purpose.
- A power adapter if the listing omits one, $12–18. Read the listing carefully — “no AC adapter” is the most common gotcha on the cheapest units. A generic 65 W adapter for your brand fixes it.
- Whatever’s left: nothing. It plugs into the router you already own. No switch, no rack, no fans, no drama. When you outgrow one network port, the switch guide is waiting.
eBay usually has the absolute lowest prices; Amazon Renewed typically runs $20–40 higher for the same spec but comes with a return window, which is worth real money on your first used-hardware purchase. Both are fine. Retail refurbishers (Best Buy, Newegg refurb programs) run higher still — $200–330 for the same machines as of this writing — and at that point you’re paying warranty prices for a $150-class box.
How to read a used listing like you’ve done this before
You want a T-suffix chip (i5-8500T, i5-6500T). The T means the 35 W low-power variant these tiny cases are designed around. A listing that just says “i5 8th gen” without the model number is a listing to skip — sellers who know what they have, say what they have.
Per the section above: RAM inside the box is cheap, RAM in a retail box is not. 8 GB technically works for your first three or four services, but 16 GB is the difference between “learning platform” and “constantly juggling.” The machines take DDR4 SO-DIMMs in two slots and officially support far more than 16 GB, so there’s room to grow later when (if) prices normalize.
These machines have an M.2 slot for an NVMe drive, and most also have a 2.5-inch bay for a second drive later. 256 GB is plenty for Proxmox and a stack of containers — my four-node cluster ran its first months on exactly that. A listing with “no SSD” means buying NAND at shortage prices; skip it.
The most common trap on bargain listings. The adapter is a boring 65 W brick, but each brand uses its own connector, so a missing one costs you $12–18 and two days of waiting.
Every listing advertises Windows 11 Pro like it’s a feature. You’re going to erase it in your first ten minutes and install Proxmox. What actually matters: seller rating on eBay (established refurbishers with thousands of positive reviews), or the return window on Amazon Renewed. Cosmetic grade is irrelevant for a box that lives on a shelf.
What ten services actually look like on 16 GB
The honest question about a $150 lab: is one box enough? Here’s the arithmetic. Proxmox VE’s official minimum is 2 GB for the host itself. Most services run as LXC containers (lightweight Linux containers — think “a VM without the overhead,” and here’s when to use each) that use somewhere between 256 MB and 1 GB apiece. The hungriest thing on the list is Home Assistant, which prefers a full VM.
A realistic first-year stack, every piece of which has a full guide on this site: Pi-hole for network-wide ad blocking, Vaultwarden for passwords, Uptime Kuma to tell you when things break, Home Assistant for the smart home, Jellyfin for movies — the i5-8500T’s UHD 630 iGPU handles hardware transcoding via Intel Quick Sync — Immich for private photo backup, Grafana and Prometheus to watch it all, Tailscale for secure access from anywhere, and a Docker container for everything else you’ll discover on r/selfhosted at 1 a.m.
That’s ten. On one box. With room left over.
The part nobody budgets: power (good news, it’s nothing)
The reason these little machines took over the homelab world isn’t just price — it’s that they cost almost nothing to leave on. ServeTheHome’s Project TinyMiniMicro, the most thorough independent test program for exactly this class of hardware, measured units like the EliteDesk 800 G3 at roughly 12 W at idle, with the class as a whole sitting around 10–14 W.
Run the math on 11–14 W around the clock: about 96–123 kWh a year, which at a typical US rate of $0.15/kWh comes to $15–20 per year. Not per month — per year. And the little blower fan is close to silent at idle, staying office-quiet even when it spins up under load — these machines were designed to sit on desks next to people’s ears, and it shows.
Those idle figures are ServeTheHome’s bench measurements, not mine — my own cluster’s per-node wall numbers are a future post, once I’ve measured them properly with a meter I trust. The published 35 W TDP is the CPU’s design budget, not what the whole box draws at idle; real idle is far lower, which is exactly why measured numbers from an independent lab beat spec sheets.
When $150 is the wrong budget
Honesty section. Three cases where this build isn’t the answer:
- You want to learn clustering now. One box can’t teach failover. The move is still the same hardware — just three of them, which is its own guide.
- You need brand-new, tiny-power hardware. A new Intel N150 mini PC (~$150–200, like the Beelink EQ14) idles even lower and comes with a warranty, but you trade six desktop cores for four efficiency cores — the hardware guide covers when that trade makes sense.
- You already know you’ll run heavy AI workloads. Local LLMs want RAM and newer silicon; that’s a different budget class entirely, covered in the hardware guide’s upper tiers.
For everyone else — which is nearly everyone starting out — the used six-core box is the correct first move, and it stays useful even after you outgrow it. Mine became cluster nodes. Yours will too.
