Privacy Policy

The short version: this site has no accounts, no sign-up forms of its own, and sets no first-party cookies. It does not collect your name or email. The analytics and ads services it uses are described below, and the Google ones only set cookies once you have given consent where consent is required.

Who runs this site

peira.dev is the publishing arm of Peira Labs and is written and operated by Josh Hall. "This site" in this policy means peira.dev, its articles, playbooks, and field tools. Contact: josh@peiralabs.com.

At a glance

Hosting

The site is served through Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical details of each request (your IP address, browser user agent, and the page requested) to deliver the page and to protect the site from attacks. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie only if a request has to pass one of its challenges. See theCloudflare privacy policy.

Analytics

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts aggregate page views, referrers, countries, and page-speed measurements. Itdoes not use cookies or local storageand does not fingerprint visitors.

Google Analytics 4 measures page views and engagement. It runs in Google Consent Mode, which starts with analytics and advertising storage denied. Until you give consent through the consent message, Google's tags set and read no cookies. They send only cookieless signals, such as the consent state, the page, the time, and your browser's user agent, which Google uses for aggregate modelling. If you accept, Analytics may set its measurement cookies.

Advertising

This site uses Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. Where the law requires consent, advertising cookies are used only after you consent through the consent message.

You can opt out of personalized advertising inGoogle's Ads Settings, and opt out of many third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising ataboutads.info. Affiliate links

This site is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Buying through an affiliate link costs you nothing extra.

Affiliate links go to Amazon product searches for hardware an article discusses. Some of it runs in this lab; some is the alternative an article recommends for a different budget or need. Articles with affiliate links say so on the page. Amazon handles anything that happens after you click, under its own privacy notice.

Embedded videos

Walkthrough videos are embedded from YouTube inprivacy-enhanced mode(youtube-nocookie.com), which Google says keeps views of embedded videos from being used to personalize your YouTube experience. The player is still a Google service: once it loads or you press play, Google's privacy policy applies to that player.

Comments

Article comments are powered by giscus and stored as GitHub Discussions. Reading comments loads the giscus widget; posting one requires signing in with a GitHub account and is governed by GitHub's privacy statement. This site runs no comment database of its own.

Newsletter

Subscribe links go to Beehiiv, which hosts the Trial & Error newsletter. If you sign up there, Beehiiv collects and stores your email address underits own privacy policy. This site never sees or stores subscriber emails, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.

Field tools

The field tools run in your browser. The calculators compute on the page and send nothing anywhere. The AI-backed tools call whichever model provider you configure, directly from your browser: your API key and anything you paste go to that provider under its privacy policy and never pass through or get stored by this site. The tool pages load their typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser requests those files from Google's servers.

Cookies and local storage

This site sets no first-party cookies. A few features keep small amounts of data in your browser's storage, on your device only, and none of it is sent to this site:

• The Start Here roadmap remembers which steps you have ticked off (local storage).
• The field tools remember the lab profile you enter, so you don't have to retype it (local storage).
• The AI-backed tools remember your chosen provider and model (local storage). Your API key is kept only for the current tab (session storage) and is removed when the tab closes, unless you tick "remember on this device", which keeps it in local storage until you clear it.

Clearing your browser's site data removes all of it. Cookies set by the services above are described in their sections.

Your choices

• Decline or withdraw consent through the consent message where it is shown; Google's tags then stay cookieless.
• Turn off personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of many vendors at aboutads.info (links above).
• Block or clear cookies and site data in your browser settings.
• Don't click Subscribe, comment, or affiliate links if you'd rather not interact with Beehiiv, GitHub, or Amazon.

This site holds no personal data about you to access, correct, or delete. For data held by the services above, use their own controls. For anything else, emailjosh@peiralabs.com.

Data retention

This site does not store personal information about visitors. Cloudflare and Google retain the data they process under their own policies and the retention settings configured for this site's accounts.

Children

This site is written for adults running their own home servers. It is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

When the services this site uses change, this page changes with them, and the date at the top is updated.

Everything on this site — articles, playbooks, and tools — is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. The guides document what worked in one real lab. Commands you copy can modify or destroy data on your systems, and homelab work routinely involves exactly such commands.
